    A workshop on understanding human cooperative behavior - indirect reciprocity and relevant areas -

    A workshop on understanding human cooperative behavior - indirect reciprocity and relevant areas -", supported by the Research Center for Integrative Evolutionary Science, SOKENDAI, and JSPS KAKENHI, was held at Hayama Campus, SOKENDAI, on Jan. 20th to 21st, 2024. It was held as a closed meeting on a pre-registration basis. Twenty-seven participants, including theoretical biologists and social psychologists, attended the meeting, and nine oral presentations and sixteen poster presentations were held. Participants discussed sociality of humans with interdisciplinary perspectives, and there were active interactions between theoreticians and empiricists. Discussions over posters lasted till late night, and the event ended on a high note.

    The program is open to high school students and undergraduate students who intend to enter looking to delve deeper into the world of biology in higher education. So far Molecular biology laboratory is held every July for three days and two nights. Other trial trainings by different instructors are also acceted at any time.

    The 3rd Summer school for young mathematical biologists

    The summer school was held for the first time in 4 years following the second time in 2019. In addition to lectures by 6 mathematical biologists from various fields, it was good opportunities for students, young researchers, and leading researchers to interact through face-to-face poster presentations and discussions.

    As part of our aim to clarify the adaptive evolution of vision-related genes in marine fish, we conducted a molecular biology exercise using fresh fish purchased from a local store.

    Super Science High school

    Asst. Prof. Watanabe gave a lecture for the second-year students in the SSH class “Yokokoh Academia” at the Kanagawa Prefectural Yokosuka High School. The lecture was entitled “Cricket Courtship Strategies – Social Behavior by Singing Crickets.” Then, he joined several discussion classes on setting up a rearing system for crickets and behavioral experiments on the two-spotted cricket.

    Conference

    The 3rd AsiaEvo, an international conference on evolutionary studies focusing on the Asian region, was held in Singapore.

    Prof. Naoki Irie

    The 3rd AsiaEvo Conference took place at the National University of Singapore from December 16-18, 2023, sponsored by the Research Center for Integrated Evolutionary Sciences. Professor Irie, a founding member of the conference, played a key role in planning and organizing as a member of the scientific committee. The conference attracted evolutionary biologists not only from Japan, China, Korea, India, Singapore, and other Asian countries but also from the U.S., Europe, and beyond. The event welcomed 220 participants, including esteemed editors from journals such as Nature Ecology and Evolution, Journal of Zoological Letters, and Journal of Experimental Zoology part B. The attendees actively engaged in discussions on evolutionary biology, presenting their findings through 137 oral presentations (across 15 symposia) and 45 poster presentations. The diverse group of participants, spanning Asia, the U.S., and Europe, contributed to a rich exchange of ideas. The next conference is scheduled to take place in Kunming, China.
