人類の歴史におけるヒトと環境との相互関係の変遷を解明することを目指している。考古遺跡から出土する動・植物遺体資料（骨、種子、花粉など）を分析し、ヒトの活動が他の生物や周辺環境にどのような影響を与えたか、また自然環境の変化がヒトの生業や社会にどのような影響をもたらしたか探る。家畜化・栽培化は人類史における最も重要な変化のひとつであり、文明社会の発達を可能にする一方、後の地球環境悪化を引き起こす遠因となった。現在、動植物の家畜化・栽培化と食料生産経済への移行過程を解明する研究に取り組んでおり、西アジア（トルコ、シリア、ヨルダン）をフィールドに、偶蹄類の家畜化とムギ、マメ類の栽培化の過程および経済・社会の変化を総合的に解明する研究を行っている。そのほか、イノシシの家畜化過程を探るため、ユーラシア全域および東南アジア島嶼部の資料を用いて国内外の研究者と共同研究を行っている。考古学以外に、分子遺伝学、環境科学、文化人類学などの分野の専門家と協力し、過去・現在・未来の人類と環境の総合的な理解を目指し、研究を進めている。
